Zinc Does Not Protect Heavy Alcohol Users Living with HIV/AIDS

The study involved 254 participants living with HIV/AIDS with heavy alcohol consumption over 18 months. Some of the participants received zinc supplementation, while others received a placebo. Zinc had long been recommended as a potent anti-inflammatory agent to lower the risk of inflammatory illnesses, many of which occur in people living with HIV/AIDS, including heart disease and cancer.

Researchers believe HIV/AIDS to be an inflammatory disease affecting multiple organs in the body. The problem is amplified in HIV/AIDS patients who consume large amounts of alcohol.
