Can Artificial Intelligence Detect Breast Cancer Better Than The Average Radiologist ?

Applications of technology to healthcare continue to expand, and one of the areas most impacted is diagnostics. It now appears that artificial intelligence (AI) may be used to perform tasks as accurately as a highly trained radiologist (that is a medical doctor with special training in using and interpreting X-rays and other more sophisticated imaging equipment).

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women and accounts for around 500,000 annual deaths worldwide. Screening for breast cancer with regular mammograms can help with early detection. However, in some parts of the world, there is a scarcity of highly trained radiologists to read and interpret mammograms, which has led to the development of AI systems that can do some of these tasks. Implementation of the AI system could mean more women can get screened per year, particularly in areas where there are difficulties in accessing trained radiologist.
