Compulsive Internet Use in Teens May Lead to Emotional Distress

The study involved more than 2,800 adolescents from across 17 Australian high schools. Participants aged 8 years to 11 were also part of the study. The study team said the research sought to provide answers to two questions: Does compulsive internet use lead to emotional dysregulation?; and, do emotional problems lead to compulsive internet use?

The researchers found that teens who engaged more in compulsive internet use had troubles understanding their emotions and setting goals throughout the four years of the study. However, the study found no evidence that pre-existing emotional problems lead to internet addiction.
