Vaginal problems are common after menopause but are often unreported

With symptoms such as dryness, burning, or itching of the vagina, vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) is estimated to affect the majority women after menopause as the body produces less of the female hormones. However, affected women often fail to report these symptoms to their healthcare providers or seek help even when it affects their quality of life (QOL).

Although few studies have been conducted to understand the relationship between VVA symptoms and QOL, it appears the effect on QOL may be comparable to that seen in conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Some treatments such as lubricants and vaginal moisturizers can be obtained without a prescription but a medical consult may be necessary.
