Adolescent Mental Health in the Coronavirus Pandemic

it would be a wild imagination to think there would be a time people would be asked to stay off work – or work from home – for months. This is the new normal that has resulted from the coronavirus pandemic.

This new normal, for many, has been one of anxiety, fears, and stress, as many have lost their jobs, been furloughed, or lost a loved one, potentially taking a toll on their mental health – especially for young adults. Describing the current reality, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres say the new normal is not normal, citing that it may result in maladjusted people who may be forced to cope with non-contact within the society.

The UN chief therefore cited the need to ramp up mental health services at this time, especially for adolescents who find the new reality most uncomfortable. He advised that countries initiate mental health programmes to help engage youths and encourage societal contact, which are integral to emotional and mental health.
